She Makes Life Better: Meet Twin Therapists, Tedra and Kendra

In what ways does your business help clients better navigate life challenges?

ICU Christian Counseling Services is a therapeutic practice that emphasizes the importance of both mental health and spiritual health. Our services are Inspired, Courageous, and Uniquely designed to ensure that every person feels seen. When dealing with life’s challenges our practice helps individuals to learn and apply new coping skills that will shift their perspective and improve their way of thinking. Most clients are looking for ways to feel, deal and heal when it comes to life challenges, and our practices help them do just that.

What inspired you to enter this industry?

My sister and I both like to say that we were “called” to this industry. It honestly was not the original profession that either of us chose, but we both ended up becoming licensed therapists. My sister wanted to be a teacher, and she was for several years. I, on the other hand, went to college with aspirations of going into the medical field. We both learned through our journeys in life, that God had a different plan laid out for us and thankfully we both were in the right position when the time came to branch out and start our practice. We felt that there was a need within the mental health field to help those who were struggling to understand how spiritual health impacts mental health and vice versa. Our practice’s mission and goal are based on this premise.

How do you empower women to cultivate a positive mindset for their overall well-being?

Engaging in self-care can be a great way to relieve stress, deal with negative emotions, and improve overall well-being. In our practice, we place a high emphasis on taking care of oneself and this includes the whole person as body, soul, and spirit. Many times, we focus on nurturing just one or two of these aspects and neglect the others, but they are all equally important as it relates to taking care of ourselves. Often as women, we tend to have several different roles and wear many hats which leaves little room for “me time.” Unintentionally, we forget to prioritize ourselves because we are so busy trying to be everything for everyone else. I often use the analogy of the “oxygen mask.” When you board the airplane, you are told that in the event of an emergency, you should first put your oxygen mask on yourself before trying to help anyone else. This should be the same concept and mindset when it comes to self-care. We really can’t properly help anyone else until we first make sure we have helped ourselves.

Can you share a few strategies for overcoming common barriers that prevent many from achieving their health & wellness goals?

This is such a great question that many of us struggle with constantly. I have tried several strategies when it comes to reaching health & wellness goals. What I have found is that over every new weight loss fad or dieting trend, the only thing that will break those common barriers is consistency. Consistency is like a muscle that you must train and strengthen until it just becomes a way of life. The most important thing I’ve learned about consistency is that it is not about the quality of your effort it is about the quantity! If your goal is to go to the gym five days per week, start by going and staying for at least 10 minutes. It’s less about how long you stay there and more about the fact that you made it there five days! As time goes on and you build a habit, the quality of your consistency will naturally progress.
